Thoracic-Lumbar-Sacral Orthosis (TLSO)

General Description:

The Thoracic-Lumbar-Sacral Orthosis (TLSO) is a custom molded design back brace which is specifically engineered to stabilize the spine for a wide variety of conditions.  Usually a two-piece foam lined plastic clamshell design with straps which can be tightened for varying degrees of support, it can also be a one piece design which opens in the front or rear.

Indications:

  1. post-operative stabilization of the spine
  2. unloading anterior compression fractures
  3. slippage of one vertebrae over another
  4. stable lumbar/thoracic fractures and musculoskeletal injuries

Lumbar-Sacral Orthosis (LSO)

Lumbar-Sacral Orthosis (LSO)

General Description:

The custom molded Lumbar-Sacral Orthosis (LSO) is a rigid thermoplastic body jacket with a soft foam interface. This design extends from mid-back down to the pelvis and can be a two piece clamshell construction or a front opening one-piece design. Measurement for this device entails a plaster cast taken around the patient’s torso and is immediately removed to fabricate the custom molded orthosis.

Indications:

  1. post-operative stabilization of the spine
  2. lumbar vertebrae fractures
  3. chronic back pain
  4. slippage of one vertebrae over another
  5. stable lumbar fractures

Charcot Restraint Orthotic Walker (C.R.O.W.)

C.R.O.W. (Charcot Restraint Orthotic Walker)

Description:

A C.R.O.W. walker is fully padded on the inside and is a combination of an ankle-foot-orthosis (AFO) and a custom boot.  This walker incorporates a rocker bottom sole for an easier and smoother step during walking.  The purpose of a C.R.O.W. walker is to allow equal weight distribution through the leg and foot.  This walker also prevents foot and ankle movements while walking.

Indications:

  1. patients with foot ulcers
  2. patients with insensate feet
  3. charcot joint

General Description:

A custom foot orthotic is an anatomically molded insert that does more than just support the feet.  Foot orthotics are designed to control foot function by correcting imbalance and properly aligning your foot.  The purpose of a foot orthotic is to distribute your body weight away form a painful area, prevent pain while walking, and/or prevent range of motion in the joints of the foot.

General Description:

A custom Knee Orthosis provides control for knee ligament injuries and instabilities.  A KO can also provide stabilization during the first year after knee surgery.  Furthermore, a custom Knee Orthosis is designed to provide corrective forces to align the leg and redistribute body weight away from the painful side of the knee. 

Indications:

  1. knee instability
  2. ruptured ACL
  3. other knee ligament injury or rupture
  4. osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease)

Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO)

Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO)

General Description:

A Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO) is a custom molded plastic or metal leg brace which is used to provide stability to the knee and ankle joints.  This device extends from the thigh to the foot and is designed to keep the lower limb in proper alignment while minimizing instability.  These instabilities can be the result of injuries, skeletal mal-alignment, broken bones, arthritic joints, knee hyperextension, muscular weakness, paralysis and stroke just to name a few.

This orthosis is created using a cast impression taken from the patient’s leg and then filled with plaster to be modified.  The modified cast is used to custom bend the metal knee joints and vacuum form plastic over it to achieve the custom molded fit.  There are many different KAFO designs which are specific for each patient and condition.

  1. spina bifida

Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO)

General Description:

An Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) is a device used to control instabilities of the foot, knee and ankle.  This orthosis (brace) is specifically designed for patients with muscle weakness, contractures, neurological conditions and skeletal anomalies.  AFO’s are usually made of a high quality plastic and extend from below the knee distally to include the foot.  An AFO can be configured with or without ankle joints depending on what degree of control your Physician and Orthotist need to maintain.  The AFO is designed to be worn with a shoe and it is sometimes necessary to use a larger size to accommodate room for your foot and the orthosis.

Indications:

  1. fractures, sprains, arthritis and trauma 
  2. stroke
  3. multiple sclerosis
  4. cerebral palsy
  5. spina bifida
  6. drop foot

Hip Abduction Orthosis

Hip Abduction Orthosis

General Description:

The Hip Abduction Orthosis is primarily utilized post surgically to hold the head of the femur into the hip socket (acetabulum).  Usually following a revision surgery or hip dislocation, this device can be set to allow limited flexion, extension and abduction of the hip joint.  By limiting this motion the hip can heal in proper alignment and ensure a successful recovery.  This device should be worn 24 hours a day unless otherwise instructed by your physician.

  1. hip dislocation
  2. post total hip replacement surgery
  3. post hip revision surgery

General Description:

            The CTO is designed to support the cervical region of the spine from C-1 to C-7.  This orthosis will limit motion of the cervical spine by inhibiting flexion, extension, rotation, and lateral bending.

Indications:

  • C-1 to T-1 spinal immobilization

Hyper-Extension Spinal Orthosis

General Description:

            This spinal orthosis is designed to extend the thoracic spine, prevent forward flexion, and limit rotation.  This orthosis encorporates a front, rectangular metal frame that applies pressure on the upper sternum and pubic bone areas to encourage spinal extension.

Indications:

  • stable compression fractures of T-7 to L-2
  • needed thoracic extension to correct kyphotic posture
  • thoracic instability
  • needed extension or hyperextension for spinal alignment and reduce pain

General Description:

This spinal orthosis provides spinal stability and abdominal support by generating inner abdominal pressure.  Anterior and posterior panels and overlapping sides provide limited flexion, extension, and lateral bending.

Post-op Knee Ranger

General description:

This knee orthosis, designed primarily for post-operative use, has easy-to-don thigh and calf foam wraps which are attached to hinged uprights.  To maintain ideal brace position, a small anti-migration strap is incorporated into this orthosis.  There are flexion limits of 0 to 135 degrees and extension limits of 0 to 90 degrees in 15 degree increments. 

Indications:

  • locked or limited motion control of knee during rehabilitation after operative procedures
  • injury to knee ligaments or cartilage
  • stable or internally fixed fractures of tibial plateau, condyles, or proximal tibia and distal femur

Pneumatic Walking Boot

General Description:

The pneumatic walker contains custom inflated aircells that are adjustable to accommodate changes in limb dimensions throughout the healing process while maintaining stability and immobilization.  This walker is effective in managing edema and fracture healing.  The lower rocker sole provides increased comfort and natural ambulation.

  • stable fracture of foot and/or ankle

  • post-operative use

General Description:

The hinged elbow orthosis has full circumference shells above and below the elbow for stabilization and soft tissue containment.  These shells are connected by a hinge with flexion and extension adjustments.  Also, the elbow hinge has the ability to lock in various positions.

Indications:

  1. soft tissue repairs
  2. stable elbow fractures
  3. post dislocation
  4. post subluxation
  5. epicondylitis

Custom Elbow Orthosis

General Description:

The custom hinged elbow orthosis is fabricated from a patient’s cast mold.  The shells cover portions of the effected arm above and below the elbow and are connected by a pair of hinges that track the elbow’s range of motion.  This range of motion can be locked, allow full range, or permit a limited amount of motion.

Indications:

  • severe or chronic elbow instability
  • trauma
  • post-operatively
  • immobilization
  • arthritis
  • muscle strength imbalance
